We are interested both in the interpretations of the whole emblematic collections and of single emblems. The exemplary issues fitting the project’s subject area are:

  • Character of relation between word and image in this kind of artistic activity: comment, addition or separate existence? Relation between early modern poetic theory and its practical manifestations.
  • Contemporary methods of analysis: iconology, contextual or semiotic interpretation and other.
  • From icones to ekphrases: which and whom images were commented?
  • Emblems, visual poetry and their alike as the prehistory of “liberature”? How were the emblems read?
  • The presence of emblems in aforetime iconosphere (occasional literature, visibility in architecture, plates in the service of the encyclopaedical and didactic publications).
  • Emblema sacra – believing in transcendental signs: meditative art, “saint” poetry.
  • Polish emblematic editions and their fields of use: poetry, science, history, faith.
  • Forgotten Polish copperplate engravers and emblem-writers.
  • History of the print offices specialised in publishing emblematic prints in former territory of Poland.
  • The function of illustrations in old Polish prints (for example: plates in 16th century Bible editions).
  • The influence of foreign models on Polish emblematic literature (translations, copying of plates, all other references and manifestations).

Because of the project’s goal of popularisation, the character limit is 15 thousand characters (circa 6 pages of typescript).
